My New Year’s Resolution – The benefits of outsourcing

Welcome back! Like many others, this week I am back at work for the year, refreshed after the summer break and ready to tackle the year with new plans and ideas. 

This year I have made a professional New Year’s resolution I want to share. Follow the advice I give my clients: Outsource. 

Towards the end of last year I started to outsource some work I just wasn’t getting around to doing. Over the break I reflected on the past year and thought about what I want to achieve in 2015 and where I want to take my business, and I came back to the outsourcing that I encourage my clients to do and thought “Why didn’t I do that sooner?” 

It is vindicating to find that when I practise what I preach to my clients, I achieve what I tell them they will! I tell the supplier what I want and it happens, while I get on with doing work for my clients and on growing my business. 

Here are the top reasons to look at outsourcing some of your business functions in 2015. 

1. Efficiency. Engaging a professional supplier to take on certain tasks frees you or your staff up to focus on core roles, instead of working on something that may not be an area of expertise. Yes, some people really can be a jack of all trades, but they may not have the time to do everything well. 

2. Expertise. If you choose the right person, their passion and expertise will make their work great. If you are using someone in-house and tacking another job onto a varied job description you are unlikely to get the same results. Using an expert also means you’ll benefit from the learnings they’ve made while working for other clients.

3. Cost effectiveness. Outsourcing means you can have the skill of a marketer, recruiter, writer, artist, photographer, accountant, IT expert, website designer without actually having to hire any of those people to work for you full-time. Which also means reduced recruitment and operational costs - they don’t need a car park, desk or a meal at the Christmas function. 

4. Motivation. It is awfully hard to fire an employee. External suppliers on the other hand? Well, let’s just say they have built in incentives to deliver quick turnaround and quality, and to give you a reason to recommend them to others and use their services again. 

5. Fresh perspective. It is always good to get a fresh pair of eyes on your business and this is a bonus with professional suppliers – you don’t hire them for the fresh perspective but they bring it with them anyway.
