Don’t get stuck on social media – it’s actually about the message

Social media is an exciting and powerful addition to the marketing mix. It is still new, shiny and constantly changing and evolving… all of which means it can seem a little mysterious and complex – not to mention a must have ‘magic bullet’ for any marketing plan.

It isn’t. 

Social media is just another channel to communicate with your current and potential customers and other stakeholders.  It is a valuable tool in your marketing communications toolbox, but it is only that. 

So, how can you know whether social media is the right tool for getting your marketing messages out? 

The first step is to decide what you want to say. Develop a message that is relevant, interesting and useful to the people you want to communicate with, a message that will encourage them to do business with you. 

Then choose the channels to get that message to the right people; here is your chance to incorporate social media into your diverse marketing communications strategy. But social media is just one of the many channels you will consider - think everything from direct mail letters to PR to emails to traditional advertising to websites and… well, you get the idea.

Here it is important to once again reiterate, in terms of effectiveness, email marketing still beats social marketing, especially with the new changes to the way business content shows on social media. Your emails go directly to your list of contacts and into their inbox for them to open at their leisure, whereas posts on social media may not be seen even by those who choose to follow your business, much less those that don’t.
