Build it and they will come? How to attract traffic to your website

March 23, 2015 at 2:15 PM

In our last blog post we talked about why your website will never be finished.

However, it is all very well to have your new, nice, tidy, up-to-date website sitting there all pretty – not much use if no one comes to the party. You need to plan for ongoing investment in your online marketing to attract visitors.

There are two main ways you do this. Firstly, by investing in search engine marketing (SEM), and secondly through digital and content marketing.

Search engine marketing (SEM)
Simply put SEM is the process of gaining traffic and visibility from search engines through both paid and unpaid means. So it includes both search engine optimisation (SEO) and paid search engine advertising.

The ongoing investment in SEO means putting effort into making sure your website remains appealing to search engines. This can include ensuring your website includes quality, up-to-date content that people will want to read and share, and keeping your website design up-to-date.  Creating new content to attract links may include a regularly updated blog or press section, or well written and informative articles, tips or FAQs that place you as an expert in your field.

Paid search is the practice of gaining website traffic by buying advertising on search engines. These are the results that tend to come up at the top or right hand side of your search results. This can be a very effective way of increasing traffic to your site but adverts still need to be well planned and well written to reach the right consumer.

Digital and Content Marketing
A solid digital and content marketing strategy is a huge part of getting traffic to your website; it needs to be tailored to your business and it needs to incorporate your social media, E-News, blogging, traditional advertising, PR and so on.

As with the SEM, content needs to be dynamic and relevant to drive traffic, while also keeping your ideal customer in mind to make sure it is targeted.

This can be a lot to get your head around but taking the time to develop a solid strategy makes it all easier down the line and will result in more people seeing that lovely website of yours.
